We at The Sensory Stylist understand that many children with sensory sensitivities may strongly dislike having their hair brushed. Our approach emphasizes patience and gradual progress, helping children become more comfortable with a gentle brushing routine while carefully working through tangles over time. Incorporating water during the detangling process is often helpful in easing the removal of knots. However, when tangles become severely matted or begin to form dreadlocks, the hair may no longer be fully salvageable. In these situations, removing the matted section of hair may be necessary. We may need to cut into the matted hair but not necessarily cut out the matted hair. Serious cases may require several sessions booked closely together. We highly recommend that you schedule a haircut immediately after the detangling session, seeing that some areas of hair may become uneven due to hair loss.

From the moment Kristin arrived at our home, she was absolutely incredible. Rather than jumping right into the haircut, she took the time to get down on his eye level, talk with him, introduce herself, and engage him with little toys. She let him explore the different tools she would be using, explained everything before doing it, and moved at a pace that made him feel comfortable and secure.
What impressed me most was how naturally she turned something that can be stressful and overwhelming for young children into such a fun, positive experience. My son tolerated everything beautifully, including the clippers, scissors, and spray bottle! There were a few moments when he seemed a little nervous, giggled, or asked if we were all done, but she was so patient, reassuring, and encouraging throughout the entire process.
And the best part? When Kristin finished, my son gave her a high five, said “thank you,” and actually clapped for himself because he was so proud of what he had accomplished! 🥹
As his mom, seeing him not only successfully get through an experience that could have been difficult, but actually enjoy it and feel so proud of himself afterward, meant so much to me.

Kristin is fantastic. My son’s first haircut was abandoned in a salon because he was so overwhelmed. Now he looks forward to Kristin coming to give him a haircut. It’s such a dramatic turnaround and all because Kristin is so kind, patient and understanding. She really has a great ability to put him at ease and engage him during the haircut. Highly recommend!
