We at The Sensory Stylist understand that many children with sensory sensitivities may strongly dislike having their hair brushed. Our approach emphasizes patience and gradual progress, helping children become more comfortable with a gentle brushing routine while carefully working through tangles over time. Incorporating water during the detangling process is often helpful in easing the removal of knots. However, when tangles become severely matted or begin to form dreadlocks, the hair may no longer be fully salvageable. In these situations, removing the matted section of hair may be necessary. We may need to cut into the matted hair but not necessarily cut out the matted hair. Serious cases may require several sessions booked closely together. We highly recommend that you schedule a haircut immediately after the detangling session, seeing that some areas of hair may become uneven due to hair loss.

We at The Sensory Stylist understand that many children with sensory sensitivities may strongly dislike having their hair brushed. Our approach emphasizes patience and gradual progress, helping children become more comfortable with a gentle brushing routine while carefully working through tangles over time. Incorporating water during the detangling process is often helpful in easing the removal of knots. However, when tangles become severely matted or begin to form dreadlocks, the hair may no longer be fully salvageable. In these situations, removing the matted section of hair may be necessary. We may need to cut into the matted hair but not necessarily cut out the matted hair. Serious cases may require several sessions booked closely together. We highly recommend that you schedule a haircut immediately after the detangling session, seeing that some areas of hair may become uneven due to hair loss.

Sensory friendly haircuts for children can be routine or they can require more time. Very often, noticeable results may take some time to develop in the first phases of the haircut process. After a routine has been established and trust is gained, the process generally becomes more efficient and comfortable over time. Consistency is key in these cases. All kids haircuts include a complimentary goodie bag filled with sensory toys. The goodie bag serves as a great distraction and its a reward incentive.
